The Telkot Homestay Model: Transforming a Village, Empowering a Community

The Telkot Homestay project is a powerful story of motivation, entrepreneurial spirit, and teamwork. It showcases how a village, once overlooked by travelers, was transformed into a thriving community-based tourism destination, setting an example for sustainable development in Nepal.

My Personal Journey: From Kathmandu to Telkot

A chance visit to Telkot introduced me to a local restaurateur whose passion and struggles mirrored the challenges faced by many Nepalese youth. Moved by the potential of Telkot and the spirit of its people, I committed myself to helping the community create sustainable livelihoods through tourism — encouraging youth to stay and build their future at home.

Overcoming Challenges: Building Trust and Vision

Convincing the community was not easy. Many villagers doubted the potential for tourism in Telkot. To build confidence, I invested personally. Together, we identified unique local assets: natural springs, hiking trails, temples, fresh local food, and cultural heritage.

Seventeen households agreed to form a community homestay cooperative, setting standards for service, pricing, and guest experience. Training programs helped hosts develop skills in hospitality and digital marketing, enabling them to connect with tourists worldwide.

Impact So Far

Hundreds of visitors have experienced genuine Nepali culture.

Increased household incomes and diversified livelihoods.

Strengthened community cohesion and cultural pride.

A Model for Others

"Alok's unwavering support and motivational guidance were instrumental in transforming our village into the first community homestay in the Bhaktapur District. His mentorship didn't just stop with us; it empowered us to educate, train, and inspire the establishment of new community homestays across Nepal."
